WordPress Front End Designer/Developer

Spire is a woman-owned strategic communications agency in Northern Virginia. We’re looking for a full-time, creative, and versatile WordPress front-end designer/developer to join our growing team.

In this role, you’ll support a diverse client portfolio that includes federal agencies, technology companies, healthcare organizations, and government contractors.

What does that mean for you? You’ll get to design and build websites that receive significant national attention.

This position is remote, but work must be performed within the United States.

What You’ll Do

Use your proven WordPress design and development skills to:

  • Design, develop, manage, and maintain attractive, user-friendly websites that meet projects’ design and functional specifications
  • Create mock-ups and clickable prototypes based on user stories
  • Design, build, and maintain highly reusable JavaScript and CSS code
  • Create and maintain digital assets, such as interface design files, wireframes, and interactive mockups using design and prototyping tools (e.g., InVision, Moqups)
  • Create and/or edit photographs and other visual assets
  • Create, maintain and/or update website architecture(s)
  • Administer websites’ backends, including the database and server admin
  • Work with and/or build simple WordPress themes (or child themes) and simple plugins
  • Debug and troubleshoot issues and conduct website performance tests
  • Provide technical advice wherever necessary
  • Ensure 508 compliance
  • Facilitate user feedback sessions
  • Evaluate existing websites and provide actionable UI/UX recommendations and user stories for improvement
  • Animate SVGs and bring a creative perspective to web graphic animations

What You’ll Bring to Spire:

  • In-depth knowledge of front-end programming languages, a good eye for aesthetics, and strong content management skills
  • A history of deconstructing user behavior and feedback to create an improved experience for users
  • 3+ years’ experience as a UI/UX designer
  • 5+ years’ experience as a front-end developer preferred
  • Experience working with government a plus
  • A portfolio that demonstrates JavaScript proficiency (plugins, node packages, etc.)
  • Knowledge of Javascript UI frameworks (TypeScript, Angular) a plus
  • Ability to assess and remediate for 508 Compliance
  • Proficiency designing mock-ups and clickable prototypes
  • Proficiency using Git version control a plus
  • Knowledge of WordPress with Multi-Site on WP Engine/GCP
  • Knowledge of front-end and back-end technologies for WordPress (CSS3, JavaScript, HTML5, jQuery, Chrome Dev Tools, VS Code, PHP, MySQL/MariaDB)
  • Knowledge of content architecture, SEO and web accessibility
  • Experience using Adobe Photoshop
