Mid-Level Scientific Graphic Designer

Spire Communications is hiring a full-time mid-level graphic designer with demonstrated expertise in graphic design, infographics, and visual storytelling to support communications for the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF). This role will translate complex scientific and policy information into clear, visually compelling, accessible, and engaging content across digital, print, and multimedia platforms. The designer will support a broad range of design deliverables from concept through final production, including press-related materials, balancing self-directed project work with collaboration across teams and stakeholders. This position is hybrid, with the potential to be fully onsite, based at the client site in Alexandria, VA.

Salary range: $75,000-$90,000

What You’ll Do

  • Create visual assets including infographics, presentation graphics, collateral, posters, and campaign materials for press, events, exhibits, video, web, and social media.
  • Research subject matter for accuracy in illustrations and infographics.
  • Create presentation, document, and social graphic templates.
  • Adhere to brand guidelines while completing projects with accuracy and on schedule.
  • Exhibit exceptional, client-facing communication skills, listening to client goals, feedback, and constraints.
  • Package final assets for print/distribution.
  • Archive and organize digital assets using enterprise asset management systems, including Acquia DAM and Brightcove, with appropriate metadata and permissions.
  • Ensure all content meets current Section 508/WCAG accessibility requirements.

What You’ll Bring to Spire

  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in graphic design or related discipline.
  • 7+ years of professional experience in graphic design.
  • Proficiency with the Adobe Creative Cloud suite.
  • Understanding of Section 508/WCAG accessibility requirements.
  • Working proficiency with AI-assisted design tools to improve efficiency and output quality
  • Demonstrated experience communicating scientific/technical subject matter, with expertise in one or more NSF focus or technology areas (e.g., Biology, Engineering, Computing, AI, Cybersecurity); federal or federally funded research experience a plus.
