Scientific Audio Production Specialist

The position is hybrid, with potential for full-time at the client site in Alexandria, VA.

Spire Communications is hiring a full-time audio production specialist with demonstrated expertise in audio production, podcast development, and multimedia storytelling to support communications for the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF). This role manages the full audio production lifecycle, including research, interviews, scripting, narration, recording, editing, and distribution of audio content such as NSF’s Discovery Files Podcast. The ideal candidate combines strong editorial judgment, technical audio production skills, and the ability to communicate complex scientific and technical topics through compelling audio experiences.

Spire Communications is a woman-owned strategic communications and creative firm based in Alexandria, VA that supports science, technology, and engineering organizations within the government and private sectors.

This position is hybrid, with the potential to be fully onsite, based at the client site in Alexandria, VA. Occasional travel may be required.

Salary range: $80,000-$100,000

What You’ll Do

  • Produce podcasts and audio features from concept development through distribution, including topic research, guest coordination, interviewing, narration, editing, mixing, and promotion.
  • Write scripts, interview questions, narration, and supporting audio content.
  • Conduct interviews and host or narrate audio segments as needed.
  • Produce NSF’s Discovery Files Podcast, including guest research, recording, editing, and production of audio and video versions.
  • Edit and mix audio content into polished final packages for distribution.
  • Manage review, clearance, metadata, and distribution processes with stations, partners, and stakeholders.
  • Maintain organized audio files, production assets, and archives.
    Collaborate with communications and scientific teams to develop accurate and engaging content.
  • Ensure audio content meets accessibility requirements through accurate transcripts, captions for video versions, and accessible production practices.

What You’ll Bring to Spire

  • Minimum 5 years of experience as an audio producer, podcast producer, or multimedia journalist.
  • Experience researching, scripting, producing, and editing audio content.
  • Strong writing, interviewing, narration, and storytelling skills.
  • Experience producing content for podcasts, broadcast, digital, or multimedia platforms.
  • Experience serving as narrator, host, interviewer, or on-air contributor.
  • Experience preparing audio content for podcast, broadcast, radio, and digital distribution channels.
  • Experience managing audio production workflows from concept through distribution.
  • Demonstrated experience communicating scientific and technical subject matter, with expertise in one or more NSF focus or technology areas (e.g., Biology, Engineering, Computing, AI, Cybersecurity); federal or federally funded research experience is a plus.
