Scientific User Experience (UX) Designer

The position is hybrid, with potential for full-time at the client site in Alexandria, VA.

Spire Communications is hiring a full-time User Experience (UX) Designer with demonstrated expertise in user research, information architecture, and interaction design to support communications for the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF). This role shapes the usability and information architecture of NSF.gov and internal platforms, including Microsoft SharePoint and ServiceNow Employee Center, through research-driven design and user-centered analysis. Working closely with website designers, developers, content strategists, and stakeholders, the UX Designer develops research-informed recommendations, wireframes, prototypes, and testing plans that improve navigation, content organization, and task completion while balancing user needs, technical feasibility, accessibility requirements, and agency goals.

This position is hybrid, with the potential to be fully onsite, based at the client site in Alexandria, VA. The opportunity is contingent upon contract award.

Salary range: $100,000-$125,000

What You’ll Do

  • Plan, facilitate, and analyze usability studies, synthesizing findings into actionable recommendations.
  • Conduct user research through interviews, surveys, analytics, usability testing, and other research methods.
  • Evaluate digital experiences through usability reviews, accessibility evaluations, and user research to identify usability improvements.
  • Develop personas, journey maps, task flows, user flows, site maps, and information architecture recommendations.
  • Collaborate on the creation of wireframes, interactive prototypes, and experience models to validate design concepts.
  • Partner with designers, developers, and content teams to translate research findings into actionable design recommendations.
  • Recommend UX solutions that balance user needs, technical constraints, accessibility requirements, and business objectives.
  • Advise on usability best practices, plain language, accessibility, and content organization across NSF.gov.
  • Analyze user behavior and performance metrics to support continuous improvement of NSF’s digital services.

What You’ll Bring to Spire

  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Human-Computer Interaction, UX Design, Psychology, Information Science, Digital Media, or a related field.
  • 6+ years of professional experience in user experience design and research for websites or digital products.
  • Experience conducting usability studies, user interviews, surveys, heuristic evaluations, and synthesizing research findings.
  • Experience developing personas, journey maps, information architecture, wireframes, prototypes, and usability test plans.
  • Experience using Figma, Adobe XD, or similar prototyping and UX design tools.
  • Understanding of accessibility principles, Section 508/WCAG requirements, and inclusive design.
  • Experience collaborating with designers, developers, content strategists, and stakeholders throughout the design process.
  • Familiarity with web analytics tools and using data to inform UX recommendations.
  • Demonstrated experience communicating scientific and technical subject matter, with expertise in one or more NSF focus or technology areas (e.g., Biology, Engineering, Computing, AI, Cybersecurity).
