Senior Scientific Audio-Video Production Specialist

Spire Communications is hiring a full-time senior audio-video production specialist with demonstrated expertise in multimedia production leadership, strategic communications, and team management to support communications for the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF). This role leads the planning, coordination, and execution of NSF video and multimedia productions, overseeing teams, production workflows, and creative approaches that support the agency’s communications objectives. The ideal candidate combines senior-level production experience with the ability to translate complex scientific and technical topics into compelling content for diverse audiences across digital, web, and broadcast platforms.

This position is hybrid, with the potential to be fully onsite, based at the client site in Alexandria, VA. Occasional travel may be required. The opportunity is contingent upon contract award.

Salary range: $110,000-$145,000

What You’ll Do

  • Conceive and recommend video and multimedia productions that align with NSF’s strategic communications objectives.
  • Manage and mentor multidisciplinary production teams, including producers, videographers, editors, animators, and external production partners across productions of varying scale, format, and complexity.
  • Coordinate with scientists, engineers, NSF staff, and other stakeholders to gather materials, plan production activities, and ensure accurate representation of technical subject matter.
  • Develop production plans, schedules, staffing models, equipment requirements, and workflows for productions ranging from short-form digital content to complex multimedia programs.
  • Oversee production quality, creative direction, and technical execution across video and multimedia projects.
  • Develop strategic distribution, marketing, and promotion plans for video and multimedia content.
  • Perform operator-level maintenance of production equipment and support equipment readiness for productions.
  • Manage production files, archives, and asset organization to support long-term access and reuse of multimedia content.
  • Coordinate with external partners, researchers, universities, media organizations, and collaborators to support co-produced content initiatives.
  • Collaborate with communications teams to identify opportunities for new video and multimedia storytelling approaches.
  • Establish production workflows that incorporate accessibility requirements, including captioning, transcripts, metadata, and accessible distribution practices across video and multimedia projects.

What You’ll Bring to Spire

  • Minimum 10 years of experience producing video and multimedia projects.
  • Demonstrated experience leading video production teams and managing complex multimedia initiatives.
  • Experience developing production strategies, project plans, and distribution approaches for video and multimedia content.
  • Experience translating complex scientific and technical topics into compelling content for diverse audiences.
  • Experience collaborating with scientists, researchers, executives, and technical subject matter experts.
  • Strong understanding of video production workflows, post-production processes, equipment, and digital media distribution.
  • Demonstrated experience communicating scientific and technical subject matter, with expertise in one or more NSF focus or technology areas (e.g., Biology, Engineering, Computing, AI, Cybersecurity); federal or federally funded research experience is a plus.
